"Say,
Hiram, how many banjo players does it take to screw in a light
bulb?"
"Five, Miram. One to screw the bulb
in and four to complain that it's electrified!"
Uncle Ely Doty, who never spells his name
the same way twice, sneaked
down from Lickskillet last month to sit in
on the Youth in Bluegrass Music Contest on Indian Arrowpoint Road (which
everyone under seventy calls "Indian Point Road") held at
Silver Dollar City. The contest was tipified by the "Luke Ham
Sandwich Family Band" from Longmont, Colorado, an adorable mix of
Black and white kids in cowboy outfits with sandals or Reeboks. They
didn't win, but they went off the Richter scale on the Adorable Meter.
(Go to www.lukehamsandwich.com,
but WARNING! Diabetics must takle insulin before visiting the website! A sugarcuteness-induced coma could result
otherwise!) The point of mentioning them is that Bluegrass, we are
adjured by some aficionados, is the only musical genre still being taught in the family environs and utilized in the family band
format. (Although Gospel might also be, and such things as Irish music
fit the format in Ireland or Irish homes.) --"Tiny"

"The
Lukasiewicz family (pronounced Luka-savage) entertained the crowds and
were big hits with visitors of the 2006 Colorado Farm Show. The
family name was so often mis-pronounced that it became the inspiration
for the band's name: "The Luke Ham Sandwich Family
Band." Band members include dad, Del; mom, Debbie; and all
the Lukasiewicz children: Tim, 16; Danika, 15; Taylor, 12; Ty, 10;
Ronnie, 9; Chase and Travis, 6; and 'Princess' Tori, 5.

FIDDLIN'
AROUND AT THE ROSE
Black
Rose groups always a pleasant surprise
"You
never know who will show up at the Black Rose Acoustic Society concerts
to make great music... This time, eight kids compromising the "Luke
Ham Sandwich Family Band" took the stage with fiddles in their
hands ready to show they knew their stuff. They... never
intended to form a family band. The idea was just to get some
musical training...Timothy, the oldest started piano lessons, and his
sister, Danika, took formal violin lessons. Before long the whole
gang was clamoring to be included. They all looked forward to
turning four when they could start...They started doing shows at nursing
homes and before Debbie knew it, the family had an actual
band."
